Introduction to Batik

Learn how to create an original batik utilizing the ancient technique of applying wax and dyes to cotton and rayon fabric. The focus of this workshop is to assist in the development of both functional and decorative fiber arts creations such as: stand alone batiks, wall hangings, quilts and wearable art. Participants will be introduced to the elements and principles of design. The introduction to these design techniques will help in the development and creation of future fiber arts projects. This class is open to beginner and advanced students.  Knowing how to draw is not a prerequisite for taking this workshop.

Introduction to Fiber Arts

Afraid of color? Confused about composition? This is the class for you. Surface Design Workshop

Wondering what interesting methods for creating fiber art projects might be available. In this class you will explore a wide variety of surface design techniques including: marble printing, low immersion, silk screen printing, stamping, ice printing and direct dying. Many of these techniques can be applied to a wide range of fiber art ventures or used to embellish a variety of personal projects.  Students from beginner to advanced are accepted.

Meet the instructor

Thom Scott


Thom Scott’s background includes B.F.A. and M. A. degrees in art and a career in art education and school administration. Now retired, Thom is able to work fulltime creating art in the areas of printmaking, painting, fiber art and fine jewelry. In 2004 Thom co-founded the Burnett Area Arts Group, known as BAAG, an active local visual arts organization. Thom has also taught several batik classes locally and in Door County, WI at Sievers School of Fiber Arts. He has also taught classes in Surface Design, Encaustic, Drawing and Acrylic Painting. Thom is an active member of BAAG and his artwork can be found at the Northwest Passage Art Gallery, Webster, WI.

Surprising Designs

Unlock the design potential of traditional quilt blocks using simple principles of value and color placement. Discover techniques for creating a multitude of quilts from a single block by simply playing with fabric arrangement. You will experience the process by creating a nine-block medallion quilt using a single quilt block. Tips on color choices as well as precise and efficient piecing methods will be discussed. Introduction to Confetti Landscape

Discover the joy of creating beautiful landscape quilts using the technique of tulle applique. The class will explore layout, composition, perspective and color while reviewing examples of woodland landscapes. Carol Goerke Johnson

You might say Carol Goerke Johnson is a late bloomer.  She began her art journey sometime in her 70th year.  In describing her creative process she explains that "Mentally, I don't plan a thing out. I have a general idea where I’m going.  It's more an intuitive thing that leads me somewhere." For Johnson art is also therapeutic. "I think my art has always been an emotional part of my life." Her work encompasses several media and is on display and for sale at the Northwest Passage Gallery.
